Welcome Back

A Welcome Message from Mr. Barkes.

Hello, Sprague Olympian Students and Families,

If I haven’t met you yet, my name is Chad Barkes and I am the principal at Sprague High School. I want to welcome you to the Olympian family and say how much we are looking forward to seeing you in person. I hope that you have had a relaxing vacation and have had a chance to spend some time with your family and enjoy our beautiful Oregon summer. At Sprague, we have been working hard with our amazing team to prepare a great experience for you, even if we can’t start the year in person.

Although we are starting our school year out through comprehensive distance learning, I want you to know that we are here to support you and your family. We are following the health metrics from Oregon Health Authority to see when we can reopen our school buildings for in-person instruction in our blended learning model. You can expect comprehensive distance learning through November 13th for students in K-10 and through January 29 for 11th and 12th grade students. If the metrics improve, we may be able to get our earliest learners (K-3) and other groups of students who might be struggling back in small groups prior to that time. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the COVID cases go down quickly. I try to remind myself that every time my family chooses to stay at home, wear a mask, and avoid social gatherings, we are bringing the day closer when life can get back to normal.

Many of you are wondering about the details of the school year and what distance learning will be like this fall. At this time our first official day of school (Comprehensive Distance Learning) will be September 16th. I’ve created a video to list some of the details about our upcoming year and I’ve also created a Google Form where families can post questions about our upcoming year. Some of the improvements to our distance learning include having a regular class schedule, grades, attendance, and a streamlined and easy-to-use learning management system. Students will be learning new content at a high level and they will have access to their teachers every day. If you have specific questions that you would like to have addressed, please use the link at the end of this webpage.

I know many of you are concerned about collecting personal items that were left at school last year, or may be wondering about how to pick up a Chromebook for the fall if you did not get one this spring. Please know that the district is working on communication about both of these things and you should have an answer in the near future.

Until then, please remember, you can call or email our office, or request to speak to a counselor by using the form on our website. I know you have a lot of questions still and there is still a lot of planning going on.

Thanks for being a part of our Sprague community. Let’s go Olys!
