Sprague as GVC District Champions

It didn’t take Sprague High School junior Nathan Rediger long to put on a show in the championship round Saturday in the Greater Valley Conference District wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Competing in the final of the 152-pound division at Forest Grove High School, Rediger used the “cement mixer” to put West Salem senior Hunter Lucas on his back in the first 30 seconds of the match.

Rediger never let No. 1 seed Lucas escape from his impressive move and won by fall at 1:15 of the first period.

“I was just giving it everything I’ve got,” said Rediger, who won his first district championship. “I felt pretty confident I was gonna get the pin, but anything can happen. That’s the great thing about the sport. I love how it can go either way.”

The win helped ignite Sprague en route to repeating as district champions. The Olympians had nine wrestlers in the finals, but the first three lost.

When Rediger entered the wrestling circle, he was determined to change the fortunes for Sprague.

“I wanted to get us started in a big way,” Rediger said. “I just want to do the best I can for the team.”
